Which keys are easy to copy
Most standard house keys can be cut from the original in a few minutes. Bring the key that works best, not a worn copy of a copy, since small errors add up with each copy.
Keys that need more
- Restricted or high security keys. Some lock systems use key blanks that only authorized dealers can cut, often only for the registered owner with ID. A locksmith can tell you if your key is one of these.
- Car keys with a chip. Many newer car keys and fobs contain a chip that has to be programmed to the car, not only cut. Have the year, make and model ready, and proof that the car is yours.
- No original at all. A locksmith can often make a key from the lock itself. If you just moved in and don't know who has copies, rekeying is usually the better choice.
